The 16th Annual Artists For Africa Benefit

ARC's held its 16th Annual Artists for Africa Benefit Gala on May 22nd at the Maritime Hotel in New York City. This event, which centers on an auction of exceptional African photography, has helped build ARC's network in the Tanzania rainforest into one of the most effective grass roots conservation and community development project in all of Africa.

This year Professor Michael Oppenheimer, world renowned scientist, author and spokesperson for global climate change, was honored with the 2007 New Species Award.

The earth's forests are in crisis. Some 80 percent of old growth forests worldwide-home to about half the planets' species-are already gone. Deforestation contributes 25 to 30% of global warming gases to the atmosphere. The loss of rainforest is one of the greatest catastrophes in human history, and it is preventable.

Since 1990, ARC has been at the vanguard of grass roots conservation in the rainforests of Tanzania, one of the most bio-diverse habitats in the world. Acre by acre, there are more unique species of plants and animals than any other habitat on earth. Where ARC is working, the forests are coming back.

This event enables ARC to support the villages now planting over 100,000 trees each month for another year. Over 6 million trees have been planted. You can make a difference - take an active role in supporting ARC.
